The study of high turbidity water treatment and the reuse of sludge generated

Wastewater treatment technologies are becoming vital for management of water resources in countries like Taiwan, where water shortage is a looming problem. This project mainly focuses on high turbidity raw water treatment and the reuse of sludge generated along the course of treatment. The foremost objectives of this project are to produce clean water with low residual aluminum, low conductivity, sludge-reusable, and must comply with standards of drinking water. PACl and Chitosan bioflocculant are both employed separately and in combination to investigate the optimum operational parameters. It is noted that application of bioflocculant effectively reduces the turbidity of water with high NTU values. A pilot plant that is launched for the treatment of 2.4 m3/d water with high turbidity (17,400 NTU) successfully obtains clean water with 5 NTU in the effluent. Experimental results also show that the turbidity removal efficiency after the utilization of bioflocculant is approximately 99%. Furthermore, the alkalinity of treated clean water is around 7.72 ~ 8.05, and water conductivity is raised for around 8 ~ 13 μS/cm. On the other hand, sludge produced during the treatment of high turbidity water has been also specifically treated to be reused as construction material. The sludge is collected and mixed with gravel under certain proportion before it is sent to high-temperature sintering process for manufacturing high quality construction material. Experimental result shows that the material (sintered sludge and gravel mixture) has excellent physical and mechanical properties, such as high mechanical strength and high stability. Last but not least, this project provides an effective resolution plan for high turbidity water treatment (especially during storm period), which instantly generates clean water that complies with drinking water standard and further resolve the water shortage problem in Taiwan.
